Watchmen / Alan Moore

Watchmen

by

Alan Moore / illustrated by Gibbons & Higgins

published by DC Comics in 1986
read by Agamedes in June 2009 (and previously in June 2007)
science fiction / illustrated novel

Apparently, I read this first in June 07 (it seems to be more recent). Then it became a movie, then I borrowed Tim’s copy and re-read it, in June 09. First time I thought, Wow! This is more than a comic! Hea-vy... This time -- with no “comic” expectations -- I managed to follow the plot. It’s complex but clear, a parallel but close-by universe with a “villain” who kills millions in order to gain world peace. The book is also an exploration -- or expose -- of the reality and psychology behind people who dress up as costumed crime fighters. The illustrations are an essential part of the story-telling. They also add depth, impact and occasional humour. Worth the read, especially to see what is possible with an "illustrated novel".

Agamedes' rating: 8 out of 10
