It says on the back cover, “Within the first 15 pages I was carried away by the sheer craziness of it all...” Well, okay. Lots of craziness -- but not enough plot. There were enough fun ideas -- even enough good fun ideas to provide a great setting for several great novels. Instead, Moers has used the ideas themselves as the point of the book. When Bluebear gets to the city of Atlantis, for example, there are several pages listing and describing the various types of inhabitants. I would have preferred to have each described if and only if those inhabitants appear in the narrative. When plot finally appeared, it was a bit sudden and a bit light. The book is great on ideas but short on story. An entertaining but lightweight and somewhat unsatisfying read.
