rated 6/10: read to pass the time

Chicklit. Tough yet tender heroine. Two incredibly handsome potential partners. Many changes of clothes.

This book is chicklit fantasy -- and very enjoyable.

The plot -- at least, the key ingredient of why the girl is in the centre of the action -- is ridiculous.(Though there are signs that her long-term relevance may be more than it seems... cliché alert :-)

Once we accept that she is there and involved... it's a lot of fun. Longing looks, brief touching of hands, hearts racing and all.

Plus, there is a murderer on the loose. And that plot -- minor but essential -- is well managed. Obvious heroes... who may, in fact, be evil. Obvious villains who are... well, ultimately villainous.

There is enough action to be interesting. Enough mystery to keep me thinking. Enough silliness to keep me happy.

It's not a "great" book. But I enjoyed every page.

Chicklit aside: I'm sure that "romance" used to involve a torn-apart couple, clearly made for each other, finally overcoming all obstacles in order to achieve a long-term happy-ever-after as a couple.

More modern chicklit has a different view of romance. Much more satisfaction in the here-and-now.

A modern heroine longs for two different heroes who are also longing for her. Either would be suitable, one or both may be, somehow, out of bounds. The heroine is not searching for the happy ever after. She is enjoying the present attentions, the challenging pleasure of not knowing which swain to choose...

There is no final partnering. There is, at best, a series of books. With the same happy suspense. With unrequited love until.. at least... until the author begins a new series.
